GREER, SC – January 24, 2026
It is with profound sadness that the BMW CCA Foundation announces the passing of Dr. Leo Newland, a founding Trustee, past President, and a cherished figure in the BMW community. Dr. Newland passed away peacefully in the early hours of Thursday, January 22, at his home in Fort Worth, Texas.
Leo Newland’s influence on the BMW Car Club of America (BMW CCA) spanned nearly five decades. A true servant leader, he was a founding member of the Lone Star Chapter in 1977, served as the South Central Zone Governor in the 1980s, and became National Board Secretary in 1981. His leadership was instrumental in shaping the BMW CCA into the world-class organization it is today.
Within the BMW CCA Foundation, Leo’s legacy is indelible. As a founding Board member in 2002, he was a tireless advocate for the Tire Rack Street Survival® teen safe-driving program and the Foundation’s Ambassador network. His philanthropic support made the “M Platz” at The Ultimate Driving Museum a reality, providing a permanent space for enthusiasts to gather and pay tribute.
In 2014, in recognition of his lifetime of service, the BMW Clubs International Council honored Leo with the prestigious “Friend of the Marque” award.
“Leo was more than a Trustee; he was a mentor and a dear friend to all of us,” said Bruce Smith, President of the BMW CCA Foundation. “His wisdom, kindness, and dedication will never be forgotten.”
Beyond his automotive passion, Dr. Newland was a distinguished Professor Emeritus at Texas Christian University (TCU), where he spent decades as a respected educator and researcher.
The Board of Trustees, Foundation staff, and our nationwide network of Ambassador volunteers extend our deepest condolences to his wife, Marian, and the entire Newland family.
Information regarding a Celebration of Life will be shared as it becomes available.
