In 1983, the German authorities had recognized ALPINA as a manufacturer in its own right – and 1982’s stunning BMW ALPINA B7 S Turbo was a prime example of why the German Federal Ministry of Transport saw fit to recognize the firm as such. Based on the BMW 635 CSi, the 3.5-litre M30 six-cylinder engine was treated to a host of changes, most notably the fitment of a KKK turbo-charger. However, ALPINA’s revisions went far beyond that, with a modified cylinder head, valves and pistons. Just 30 were built between May and September 1982, and all were finished in ALPINA Green Metallic.
The performance was shocking for the time – the standard BMW 635 CSI delivered 211 bhp and 310 Nm of torque, whereas the BMW ALPINA B7 S Turbo unleashed 330bhp and 500Nm of torque. It also far exceeded BMW’s own flagship E24, the BMW M 635 CSI, which ‘only’ had 286 bhp. The ALPINA was far quicker than the BMW M 635 CSI too, delivered a 0-100 km/h time of 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 262km/h. This particular example is production number 7, and has recently been extensively restored by ALPINA itself.
