1976 BMW 2002 #2379709
George W. Davis III
This car is among the rarest of the rare: an unmolested example of a late-production, US spec 2002, presented as it was sold new in California in 1976.
It’s so original that it even retains its California-mandated emissions control equipment. Though the system was disconnected for better cold-weather drivability, none of its five caretakers ever removed it, preserving the emissions equipment and the car overall as a time capsule from 1976.
Built in February 1976, this 2002 was purchased new by Marlene “Molly” Gage of Redondo Beach, California. The car then moved through several different owners, including John Laramore of Danville, Virginia.
Laramore had a complete engine rebuild done, along with a new radiator core, new shocks, and the upholstery was brought to as close to original as possible.
After the refresh, the car was featured in the May 2011 issue of BMW Car magazine and James Taylor’s BMW 2002, The Restorer’s Reference, and it was shown at the Hilton Head and Amelia Island concours.
Laramore enjoyed the car until late 2017, when he sold it to his friend and current owner George W Davis III.
