Jason Gipson (since 2009)
Jason Gipson says he’s “a tinkerer by nature,” and this 2002 has been a work in progress since he received it as a birthday gift from his wife in 2009. It’s his second 2002, replacing an Inka 1972 model he’d sold two years earlier.
For his second 2002, Jason wanted to work within the parameters that the car itself offered, combined with period aftermarket offerings. “My plan for the car boiled down to one phrase,” he says. “If it wasn’t available before 1985, it doesn’t go on my car…unless you can’t see it.”
The car features Hella Super 7 headlights, a Jaymic nose panel, and custom fender flares borrowed from a Mark I Volkswagen Rabbit now contain the 15-inch HRE 501 wheels. The cockpit features Scheel seats and a Petri steering wheel.
The original M10 engine was rebuilt “following proven steps to increase output while keeping it docile and reliable.” That means oversized valves, a 292 cam, heavy-duty springs and rockers, a Korman oil pan, 2002 turbo exhaust, etc. The chassis was modified with a Volvo/E21/tii brake upgrade, coilover suspension, and tii axles and hubs.
Jason likes to say “its more “GO than SHOW.” We think this car has plenty of both.
