The 2002 turbo was never offered for sale in the US, but that didn’t stop Americans from lusting after it. Some were able to import the car through the grey market, while others were lucky enough to be living in Europe, where they could purchase the cars and drive them as intended.
This 2002 turbo was built in Munich in 1974 and delivered to the Wilhelm Kohl dealership in Aachen. Before long, an American enthusiast brought it to the US, and subsequently sold the car to Larry Schwarz.
Schwarz cared for the car well, and although he didn’t know it at the time, he was driving Scott Hughes’ dream car. A BMW enthusiast and avid CCA member since 1970, Hughes had even thought about importing a 2002 turbo when the car was new.
In 2008, Scott and Fran Hughes managed to acquire the car from Schwarz. Once fully sorted, the Motorsport-built 2002 turbo quickly became a highlight of the formidable Hughes collection.
“When people ask what’s my favorite car in the collection, I tell them the 2002 turbo. I love it. It’s a normal 2002 until about 2,500-2,700 rpm. Then the turbo kicks in, and it’s a whole ’nother beast. It’s really fun.”
