Yale Rachlin wasn’t one of the first members of the BMW CCA, but became one of the Club’s most beloved and active members.
Yale purchased his first BMW in 1969, but didn’t join CCA until 1977. As the eventual Creative Director for the Club’s magazine, Roundel, he transformed the publication into the high-quality magazine club members receive today.
In early 1977, Rachlin bought this 2002 and started modifying it for both street and track use. “It opened him up to racing and the BMW driving schools, where he became an instructor,” his son David says. “People remember his encouragement, which allowed them to become better drivers. He was funny, witty and warm, and he became known for his personality and his car.”
Yale sold the car after he retired, and it fell into uncaring hands. It was found several years ago, rescued and fully restored by Club members. Scott & Fran Hughes purchased the car and donated it to the Foundation’s permanent collection.
“My father would be over the moon,” says Meryl Rachlin, “and he would be incredibly humbled by the memory and attention his car continues to bring.”
