Following its September 1973 facelift, the 2002 remained in production through July 1977, but the updated US-spec 2002 tii was built only through December 1974 before it was discontinued.
Owner Dirk Van Doren is a BMW “lifer” and says, “there is one car to own in terms of the iconic model and color: a 2002 tii in Inka. In all of the print ads and some of the television commercials, the 2002 was always Inka. When I looked for a 2002 tii, the goal was to find an unmolested, matching-numbers Inka 2002 tii with a four-speed manual transmission, sunroof, and air conditioning.”
The first four owners of this tii were all in the Seattle area. The car eventually moved to California with its fourth owner, who put it up for sale in 2014.
This 2002 tii met Van Doren’s mechanical requirements to the letter. Manufactured in 1974, it left the factory in Munich painted Inka orange and equipped with a four-speed manual transmission, a sunroof and importantly was not molested…a true survivor.
“As the saying goes,” Dirk reminds us, “there are many more Inka 2002s on the road today than were born in Inka. But this one is original, a real time capsule.”
