1973 BMW 2002 #2587530
David Roach (since 1973)
Ask David Roach why he’s kept the car he calls “Molly” for 45 years and 327,000 miles and he’ll give you a simple answer: “the grin on my face when I driver her.”
David bought the car new from VOB Datsun in Bethesda, MD on February 28, 1973. #2587530 was equipped with the Hoffman Motors Corp’s “mandatory options” of Sai upholstery, a rear torsion bar, and a tachometer, plus those David chose when placing his order eight weeks earlier: a sunroom ($165) and a Blaupunkt AM/FM radio ($170).
He joined the BMWCCA shortly after buying #2587530, and met many close friends because of Molly and the CCA.
David used his 2002 as a daily driver for ten years and close to 200,000 miles until 1983. After that, he drove it to BMW CCA rallies, autocrosses, track days, and social events, as well as on fun drives up and down the East Coast.
David replaced the original engine with a high-performance unit. He installed 15” Panasports and the shocks/struts and anti-roll bars with more performance-oriented pieces. A Getrag close-ratio 5-speed transmission, Recaro seats, MOMO steering wheel, and Kamei air dam rounded out the add-ons.
In 1993, Molly went through a restoration.
