The BMW CCA started as a community of friends. That’s what it remains, as demonstrated by “Hack Mechanic” Rob Siegel’s experience rescuing a derelict ’02 named Louie.
In January of 2017, Rob noticed a 1972 BMW 2002 tii that had turned up for sale on the web. The car appeared to be original, complete, and unmolested, with 39,068 original miles. Siegel contacted the seller, who offered the car at a price he couldn’t refuse. Having owned 36 or so 2002s in the past, Rob knew well what it would take to resurrect a long-dead 2002 tii.
Not knowing anyone in Louisville, he began discussing the car on Facebook, and offers of help, lodging, parts, and tools began to pour in, many from BMW CCA members. “Where do you find such people? Sometimes all around you, if you look.” Siegel says.
Siegel spent a week getting “Louie” running, then drove the car home to Massachusetts, “in winter, with no heat, a leaky windshield, and a loud exhaust. It was the single most exciting and satisfying thing I’ve ever done with a car,” Siegel says.
Siegel’s experience with Louie was documented in his 2017 book Ran When Parked.
