1971 Baur 2002 Vollcabriolet

Baur built just two hundred 2002 Vollcabriolets, a car that is now exceedingly rare.
Most rusted through fairly quickly due to poor drainage of water from the convertible top, making it nearly impossible to find an unrestored example. Dirk & Alexandra de Groen already had a 2002 Cabriolet when this one came up for sale, but this one was too good to pass up. “I knew it was the best 2002 cabrio out there, second to none,” says Dirk.
The car had been restored by Hans-Friedrich “Andy” Andexer, known in German ’02 circles as the “Cabrio Pope.” Shortly after the restoration, it was sold to a collector in New York. “I was fortunate to purchase it at the right time, when the collector had to get rid of a few toys,” de Groen says.
Built by Baur on February 5, 1971, this example was painted in Condor yellow, a Porsche color used on a small number of Vollcabriolets. De Groen says “As one of just 200 examples built, this 2002 cabriolet would be a rare BMW in any color. In Condor yellow, it’s a virtual unicorn.”
This car is not just for show. It’s been driven in many BMW Classic Car Club rallies since entering the de Groen garage, though Dirk is quick to mention that it’s no sports car.
