This unique E36 M3 2002 is the creation of the incredibly talented – and eccentric – Terry Sayther, of Austin, Texas.
Looking to make his 2002 as quick as a modern BMW, Terry got out his tape measure and looked at an E36 M3 compared to a much older 2002. Madness followed.
“Transfer the M3 suspension to the 2002? That would be a tremendous engineering feat,” thought Terry. “Graft in the suspension points from the E36 floor? Not as bad, but still a bunch of engineering.”
And then it hit him. “How about using the complete floor and suspension of the E36? And that’s how it happened.”
The floor of the E36 M3 needed to be shortened a few inches, which was done by fabricating a sliding framework to allow us to remove three inches without geometry changes. The 2002 body was then lowered over that structure, with minimal gaps to fill.
“The project was completed in our spare time, and the car immediately drove like it was meant to be,” says Terry. “Of course, we named it Frankenstein. We raced it for a couple seasons in BMW CCA Club Racing, with one overall win and several class victories. We left it streetable and drove it thousands of miles over the years to BMW CCA events and vintage rallies.”
