BMW’s in-house hot rod, the 2002 turbo, inspired countless flared fender conversions and performance upgrades from the moment it appeared.
Recently, enthusiasts began combining elements of the 2002 turbo with the famed E30 M3, to create “M2s” that are striking to look at and entertaining to drive. That latter aspect is crucial when you live in Northwest Arkansas, where Highway 23 demands a car with great handling and just enough power to take advantage of it.
That’s the formula Robert Chandler had in mind when he decided to commission an M2 from Vintage Sports and Restoration – a 1971 2002 with an E30 M3 drivetrain.
VSR found a 60,000-mile California car for Chandler, which they described as “straight as can be,” and he jumped on it. A year later, work commenced and VSR fitted the car with an S14 engine, custom oil pan and radiator, Alfa N airbox in carbon fiber, vintage Scheel racing seats and a MOMO steering wheel. The rear seat, carpet, sunshades and headliner are what’s still original to the car.
The body received Original BMW 2002 turbo flares and front spoiler and was painted in Estoril blue metallic, Chandler’s favorite E36 M3 color, which looks gorgeous on this car.
