1967 BMW 1600-2 #1522912
March 17, 1967
Scott & Fran Hughes (since 1998)
Sunset, South Carolina
A time capsule of BMW history, this 1967 1600-2 is all original, having remained unmolested for the last fifty years and just 17,630 miles. Owners Scott and Fran Hughes purchased the car in 2000.
“I went through nearly a dozen 2002s and 1600s before this one appeared,” Scott says. As part of the European sequence started in March 1966, it lacks the headrests, glare-free dash trim, padded steering wheel, side reflectors, and 12-volt electrical system with which cars were upgraded from August 1967.
The first two owners scarcely drove the car, and in 1998 it was sold in a church auction. People knew Scott was looking for an all-original 1600, and Leif Anderberg was sent to check it out. After inspecting the car, Leif told Scott, “you’ve got ten minutes to tell me you want it, or it’s mine.” Scott didn’t need ten minutes.
“It’s completely original except for the tires, battery, and brake master cylinder,” Scott says. It was featured in Roundel in February 2002 and placed second in the Preservation Class at the Hilton Head concours.
The car is as perfect as it gets, an exquisitely original early Type 114 two-door.
