BMW had no plans to put the Vision EfficientDynamics concept into production, but the overwhelmingly positive response at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2009 caused the board of management to re-think that decision. Five years later, the carbon-chassis, hybrid-powered i8 reached its first customers, many of whom were longtime BMW enthusiasts who’d started their journey in 1600s or 2002s.
One such enthusiast was Scott Blazey, a R75 rider who’d bought his first 2002 in the early 1970s, while stationed with the US Army in Bad Windsheim, Bavaria. Blazey left the Army in 1992, after 20 years of service, settling in Kansas City, Missouri and starting a new career in book layout, design, and prepress. (Blazey served as CCA president from 2004-’08, and he’s now a trustee of the BMW CCA Foundation.) Not surprisingly, he was drawn to the i8 by its design. “It was like nothing that came from BMW before,” he says. “I wanted to drive it. I wanted to stare at it in my garage, in my driveway, in a parking lot. I still do!”
Blazey has done more than stare at his i8, of course. Shortly after taking delivery, he drove it to New Jersey for the 2015 BMW CCA Oktoberfest, where it became the first electrified BMW to win an Ofest TSD rally. He’s also used it for HPDEs at Hallett raceway near Tulsa, Oklahoma, and for daily driving in pure-electric mode.
“It’s a tight, fun-to-drive sports car, not in the Lotus sense but more as a 2+2 GT that’s great for cruising as well as driving the fun roads,” Blazey says. “It’s also a great way to meet people. If there are any people around when you get in or out, they will walk over and start asking questions about it.”
That’s as true in 2019 as it was four years earlier, when the i8 was brand-new. The excitement of BMW’s future-think supercar hasn’t yet worn off, nor has the promise of sustainable mobility in a fun-to-drive, beautifully-designed package.
