BMW’s first new sport bike since the R 90 S, the 1998 R 1100 S installed the oil-head boxer engine in a frame with major sections in cast aluminum attached directly to the Paralever rear swingarm. The S got BMW’s first clip-on handlebars and (on a motorcycle) ellipsoid headlights, plus an aggressive seating position behind aerodynamic bodywork. The R 1100 S spawned the one-make BoxerCup racing series, followed by the BoxerCup Replica with carbon fiber cylinder head covers, Öhlins suspension, and a shorter Paralever. The BCR seen here was purchased new by the Lane Motor Museum in 2004. This is our second exhibition we have worked with the Lane Motor Museum.
The appeal of the BoxerCup races is that all riders use identical machines, the rules and regulations not allowing any technical modification of the street-legal BMW R 1100 S which might boost engine output and performance on the road. So, the only factor that counts is the rider’s skill, his courage and his tactical ability in struggling for leadership in the race. This guarantees thrilling races, exciting maneuvers on the track and tough fights for the best position up to the very last second. The BoxerCup series ran from 1999 – 2004.
